Multistate salmonella and E. coli outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts

At least 55 people across several US states have become sick after eating alfalfa sprouts from a Minnesota company called Everything Sprouts. The sprouts were sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brand names at restaurants and grocery stores.

Minnesota reported 23 cases and Wisconsin reported 17, including one person who needed hospital treatment. Other states also recorded cases. Two types of bacteria caused the illnesses: Salmonella and a harmful strain of E. coli.

Symptoms usually start between 12 and 96 hours after eating contaminated food, but can take up to two weeks to appear. Health officials have told consumers to throw away any sprouts from these brands immediately.
