Wildfires kill two in Greece and devastate Belgian nature reserve

Two people died in wildfires on the Greek island of Salamina on Sunday. Authorities believe the victims were a couple, found near Peristeria beach. Hundreds of people were told to leave their homes as the fires spread.

In Belgium, a separate wildfire burned through about 3,000 hectares of the High Fens nature reserve. This is the largest wildfire Belgium has recorded in more than a century. The fire started on Friday and had reached near the German border by Sunday morning. Around 600 people were evacuated, and five were treated at a health clinic.

Sweden sent two water-bombing aircraft to help, and helicopters came from Belgium and the Netherlands. Both fires broke out during a period of extreme heat and drought across Europe.
