Wildfire in southern Spain kills 13 people including seven Britons

A wildfire in southeastern Spain has killed at least 13 people, including seven British nationals. The fire broke out last Thursday in Almería province, near the Mediterranean coast. An electrical cable fell on a road and started the blaze. The fire burned around 7,000 hectares of land and caused serious damage to the village of Bédar. Some victims died in their cars while trying to escape. Among the dead were Pete and Fran Gillam, a British couple who lived in Bédar. Almería is home to many foreign residents, and the victims came from several countries, including Belgium, France, and the United States. Because some bodies were badly damaged, authorities needed genetic information from relatives to identify them.
