Waste mound collapse kills 30 in Guinea capital after heavy rain

A rubbish dump collapsed in Conakry, Guinea, early on Sunday, killing at least 30 people. The collapse happened around 2 a.m. after heavy rain. It buried tents and small shelters near the dump in the Gbessia area, on the edge of the city. Rescue workers used excavators to search for survivors and recover bodies. At least 18 bodies have been taken to a morgue. More than 20 people were injured, six of them seriously. Guinea's Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the site. Just days before the disaster, the government had announced plans to close the dump because of dangers during the rainy season. A similar collapse at the same site killed 10 people in 2017.
