VelociCoaster delayed opening after possible lightning strike damage

The VelociCoaster at Universal's Islands of Adventure in Florida failed to open on time on July 1, 2026, possibly because lightning hit the ride the day before. Heavy thunderstorms moved through the Orlando area on June 30, causing widespread disruption at local theme parks. At Walt Disney World, more than twenty attractions shut down due to the severe weather.

Universal did not officially confirm the reason for the delay. The VelociCoaster is the fastest and tallest launch coaster in Florida, reaching 70 miles per hour in just 2.4 seconds. It includes two launches and several inversions, and riders must be at least 51 inches tall to board. Weather-related closures can affect large numbers of visitors who travel specifically to experience popular attractions like this one.
