Vehicles set ablaze at memorial gathering in County Durham

Cars were set on fire at a memorial gathering in Haswell, County Durham on Thursday. The event was held to remember Michael Cahill, 23, who died in a serious road crash on the A66 last Saturday. At least five vehicles were burned during the gathering. People released blue balloons and flares as tributes. Video footage showed cars skidding around the field, and people on motorbikes and quad bikes were also present. A tractor later removed the burnt vehicles from the field. Police sent extra officers to the area because of the disorder. Cahill was one of five people killed when a car travelled the wrong way on the A66 near Middlesbrough. Two police officers, PCs Matthew Blades and Tom Clough, also died in the crash.
