US soldier dies during controlled detonation of Iranian drone in Iraq

A US soldier died on Saturday in northern Iraq while destroying an unexploded drone. The drone had been fired by Iran and was later shot down. During the controlled detonation, the explosion killed one service member and lightly wounded another. US Central Command announced the death on Sunday.

The incident followed an Iranian attack on a US base in Jordan, where two American soldiers were killed and one went missing. Since the US-Israel conflict with Iran began, 17 American service members have now died in total. A ceasefire between the two sides collapsed less than a month after it started. The US military has since carried out further airstrikes against Iran in response to the renewed fighting.
