United States secures majority control of Venezuelan oil reserves

President Trump announced on Friday that the United States has agreed a deal to take majority control of Venezuela's oil reserves. Trump called it "the biggest oil deal in world history" on social media. The reserves total 65 billion barrels, which would more than double current U.S. oil supplies. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth negotiated the agreement with Venezuela's interim leader Delcy Rodriguez. Private companies will also be part of the partnership. Trump said the deal will cost U.S. taxpayers nothing. He also said it will help bring down gas prices, which have risen because an ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran has blocked oil shipments through a key shipping route. Venezuela's acting president described the deal as good for the country's economic recovery.
