United States imposes tariffs on Canada after trade negotiations fail

The United States put 50% tariffs on 20 billion dollars of Canadian goods on August 23, 2026, after trade talks between the two countries broke down. The tariffs started at midnight on Saturday. Canada's Prime Minister, Mark Carney, quickly announced that Canada would respond with equal tariffs of its own, starting September 8. These will apply to steel, dairy products, appliances, farm equipment, and electronics. President Trump said Canada had been charging American farmers too much for years. He also said Canada wanted the advantages of being a US state without actually becoming one. The two sides had seemed close to a deal just two days before the collapse. No new talks have been scheduled. The dispute puts the future of the USMCA trade agreement between the US, Canada, and Mexico in doubt.
