United States imposes tariffs on Canada after trade negotiations fail

The United States has placed 50% tariffs on around $20 billion of Canadian goods after the two countries failed to reach a trade deal by a Friday midnight deadline.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada pulled back from earlier commitments and made new demands in the final talks. The U.S. had offered Canada better access to its market than most other countries received.

The tariffs apply to products like wine, dairy, furniture, clothing, and hockey equipment.
