United States imposes tariffs after trade negotiations with Canada fail

The United States has placed 50% tariffs on around $20 billion of Canadian goods, after trade talks broke down on Saturday. The two countries failed to reach a deal before a midnight deadline. Disagreements over car tariffs and Canadian decision-making caused the talks to collapse. President Trump had delayed the tariffs by three days because he said negotiations were going well. The new duties cover many products, from clothing to Christmas ornaments. Canada responded quickly with its own tariffs. It placed 25% duties on American cars, steel, and aluminium. During the talks, Canada offered to remove some of its tariffs, and the US discussed lowering its own. Neither side agreed to enough, and the deadline passed without a deal.
