United States imposes fifty percent tariff on Canadian jewelry exports

The United States put a 50 percent tariff on Canadian exports on Saturday after trade talks broke down on Friday night. The tariff covered goods worth more than $20 billion, including gold, silver, and jewelry. Many Canadian businesses have been hit hard by the change. One of them is Cindy Baldassi, a jewelry maker based in Calgary. She sells sterling silver, stone, and dinosaur fossil jewelry through her online shop, CindyLouWho2. Before the tariff, about 75 percent of her customers were American. She now expects to lose around half of them. The tariff took effect immediately after negotiations between the two countries failed.
