United States celebrates 250th anniversary with record museum visits and events

The United States celebrated its 250th birthday in summer 2026, with events and attractions drawing large crowds across the country. Washington, D.C. hosted a major state fair on the National Mall from late June to early July, with vendors and displays representing all 50 states. Museums also saw strong visitor numbers. The Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia recorded a 17 percent rise in visitors for the year, with June figures nearly 25 percent higher than the previous year. At Mount Vernon, tickets for the July 4 fireworks sold out weeks in advance. One of the more unusual contributions came from Idaho, which produced 15 handmade potato costumes depicting founding fathers and other historical figures, sending them to events around the country.
