UK government clarifies air conditioning is legal in homes

The UK government confirmed in May 2026 that air conditioning is not banned in British homes, after false claims spread widely online. Many people had believed that new rules made it illegal to install cooling systems.

In reality, homeowners can fit air conditioning in most properties without planning permission, as long as the outdoor unit stays within certain size limits and does not face the street in protected areas. Listed buildings and conservation areas need council approval.

All systems must be fitted by a certified engineer because of environmental rules around refrigerants. New homes must also try passive cooling methods first, such as better ventilation, before adding mechanical systems.
