Ugandan kingdom torn by dispute over late king's successor choice

Uganda's Tooro royal family has rejected a new king chosen by an official committee. The committee picked Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a television presenter and cousin of the late King Oyo, who died recently. However, the kingdom's prime minister said the king left behind a son who should inherit the throne instead. He made this announcement on August 27 but did not name the child or identify his mother's family. Under Tooro law, a king's son can only become king if his mother was an officially married queen. The royal family has not shared any photograph of the boy. The late king's mother said the family was placed under house arrest. The prime minister has asked everyone involved to remain calm.
