TxDOT opens diverging diamond interchange at Loop 1604 and Blanco Road

San Antonio has a new interchange at Loop 1604 and Blanco Road, built by TxDOT to reduce heavy traffic congestion. The design is called a diverging diamond interchange. It works by moving drivers to the left side of Blanco Road as they cross Loop 1604, then back to the right side at a second set of traffic lights. This unusual pattern lets cars turn left freely without crossing oncoming traffic, which makes the junction safer and faster. Drivers will also see temporary signals and concrete barriers during the adjustment period. The design is not new to Texas. TxDOT already runs seven similar interchanges near Austin, College Station, Dallas, and El Paso. The Loop 1604 and Blanco Road junction is one of the busiest in northern San Antonio.
