Two workers rescued from Nepal hydropower tunnel after nine days

Two workers have been pulled alive from a flooded tunnel in Nepal, nine days after flash floods trapped them underground. Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan were rescued on September 4, 2026, from 170 metres inside the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project tunnel. Shah was brought out first and was covered in mud when rescuers reached him. The floods hit on August 26 and are thought to have started when a glacier collapsed. They destroyed villages and infrastructure near the Nepal-Tibet border. Army spokesperson Brig Gen Raja Ram Basnet confirmed both rescues. Officials believe other workers are still trapped deeper in the tunnel system. Rescue teams are continuing their search and hope to find more survivors alive.
