Two deaths confirmed in Michigan cyclospora parasite outbreak

Michigan health officials confirmed two deaths linked to a cyclospora outbreak on August 3, 2026. These are the first deaths from this parasitic infection ever recorded in the United States. Both people who died had serious health problems before they became ill. Cyclospora also caused severe dehydration, which made their conditions worse.

Michigan alone has reported over 11,000 cases and 193 hospitalizations. Across the country, nearly 6,700 cases have been confirmed by laboratory tests in at least 34 states. Lettuce from Mexico, served at Taco Bell restaurants in nine states, has been identified as one source.

The parasite spreads through contaminated food or water. It causes diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue. Symptoms can appear up to 14 days after eating contaminated food.
