Twenty deportees arrive in Liberia under US third-country agreement

Twenty people deported from the United States landed in Liberia on Thursday, the first group under a new agreement between the two countries.

Under the deal, Liberia has agreed to accept up to 1,200 deportees within one year. Liberian officials say most of these people broke immigration rules but were not criminals. They are free to leave Liberia or ask for protection there.

The group includes people from Africa, North America, South America, and the Caribbean. Liberia will not receive money for this arrangement, but the US will help the country improve how it manages migration.
