Tuvalu boxer wins first Commonwealth Games medal without fighting

Tarona Taafaki has won Tuvalu's first ever Commonwealth Games medal, taking bronze in boxing at the Glasgow Games. The 20-year-old competed in the women's 75kg category. She reached the semi-finals without fighting, because only five athletes entered her weight class. There, she lost to India's Lovlina Borgohain. All three judges scored every round in Borgohain's favour. Under Commonwealth Games rules, boxers who lose in the semi-finals automatically receive a bronze medal. There are no bronze medal bouts in boxing. Taafaki was one of just eight athletes who represented Tuvalu at the Games. Her father Badi coached her, and her brother Pasoni also competed, in the 70kg category. Tuvalu is a small Pacific island nation.
