Trump pressures Senate leader to pass voter ID legislation

President Trump has publicly clashed with Senate Republican leader John Thune over a voter ID bill called the SAVE America Act. Trump's spokeswoman said his patience with Thune was running out. The House passed the bill in February, but it has stalled in the Senate. To pass, the bill needs 60 votes to get past a procedural block called a filibuster. Senate Democrats and some Republicans oppose it, so those votes do not exist. Republicans have also refused to remove the filibuster rule. Thune responded by telling the White House to work harder to find support. Conservative House members have also pushed the Senate to act. The Senate was on a break until mid-July when the dispute became public.
