Trump imposes 50 percent tariff on wide range of Canadian goods

President Donald Trump signed new tariffs on Canadian goods on Monday. The tariffs add 50% to the price of many products, including dairy, alcohol, car parts, and hockey equipment. The White House says Canada has treated American goods unfairly for years. Trump officials described the tariffs as a response to Canadian trade restrictions on U.S. products. Canada had introduced those restrictions after Trump imposed earlier tariffs, partly over concerns about drug smuggling. The new tariffs do not cover motor vehicles. U.S. officials say the two countries are not in a trade war, but no formal talks are currently taking place. The administration has said it is open to negotiations with Canada.
