Trump calls for cancellation of new Air Force One program citing cost concerns

President-elect Donald Trump called on the government to cancel its contract with Boeing in December 2016, six weeks before he became president. Trump said the programme to build new Air Force One planes would cost more than $4 billion. He described this as "totally out of control." The plan was for Boeing to build at least two new 747 aircraft, which were due to enter service around 2024. Later, the Secret Service raised concerns about the new planes. They said the aircraft were missing important defence systems, including protection against missiles. The new planes also did not meet US Air Force security requirements for carrying the president. Trump's move showed that he intended to look closely at large government contracts before taking office.
