Trump announces Iran negotiations scheduled to begin Monday

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that talks with Iran would start on Monday. Trump said he had cancelled plans for military strikes so that diplomacy could have a chance. He said Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar asked him to wait before taking military action.

The talks are expected to take place in Muscat, Oman. Iran's foreign minister confirmed that negotiations with Oman about a new shipping route near the Strait of Hormuz were nearly finished. A spokesperson said this route would respect both countries' security needs. He also said these talks were separate from any question of closing the strait itself.

The Strait of Hormuz carries about one-fifth of the world's energy supply. On Sunday, a tanker reported an explosion nearby, but the crew and ship were safe.
