Trump administration revokes Brazilian ambassador's US visa

The United States cancelled the visa of Brazil's ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti in August 2026. Washington said this was a direct response to Brazil's own actions. In July 2026, Brazil refused visas to two American officials who planned to visit before Brazil's October elections. Brazil said the officials were trying to interfere in the vote. The US rejected this claim and called the planned visit routine. Relations between the two countries have also suffered because Brazil has not approved Trump's chosen ambassador, Daniel Perez. The State Department said it will restore Viotti's visa immediately if Brazil approves Perez's nomination. Brazil's President Lula has so far resisted accepting the US nominee.
