Trump administration repeals EPA emissions limits for coal and gas power plants

The US Environmental Protection Agency has cancelled pollution rules for coal and gas power plants. The rules were first introduced in 2015 and strengthened under President Biden. One Biden-era rule would have forced coal plants to capture their smokestack pollution or close. The EPA says the rules went beyond its legal powers and required technology that was not ready to use. It also claims the change will save the industry $310 billion and lower energy prices. Environmental groups warn that CO2 emissions from these plants could rise to seven times the previous level. The EPA has also proposed removing all other greenhouse gas limits for power stations. The announcement came in September 2026, during a G20 energy meeting in Houston, Texas.
