Trump administration reaches deal exempting president from IRS audits

The Trump administration has agreed a deal with the IRS that would protect Trump and his family from tax audits. In return, Trump will drop a lawsuit against the agency. A contractor had leaked his tax records to a newspaper, and Trump sued over that leak. Under the deal, Trump would avoid the routine audits that other modern presidents have accepted. Critics say this is unprecedented. One existing IRS dispute with Trump could have led to more than $100 million in taxes and penalties. Both Democrats and some Republicans have questioned the arrangement. Republican senators Susan Collins and Bill Cassidy have spoken out against it. The deal has also complicated confirmation hearings for Trump's Attorney General nominee, Todd Blanche.
