Trump administration orders warnings at Smithsonian history museum

President Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 directing officials to put warning signs inside the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The signs will caution visitors that some exhibits may contain inaccurate information. The White House also published a 162-page report called "Saving America's Story." It says the museum's leadership has used history as a political tool rather than presenting it as a shared national story. The museum's director, Anthea Hartig, is named many times in the report. The museum also removed the phrase "American history" from its mission statement under her leadership. A Smithsonian spokesperson said the institution has provided nonpartisan, fact-based work for over 180 years. The Trump administration has previously accused museums and universities of showing bias against American values.
