Trump administration imposes steel and aluminum tariffs as trading partners retaliate

The United States has placed 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports, starting this Monday. These new taxes are added on top of duties that already existed from Trump's first term. The move has quickly angered major trading partners. The European Union approved its own 25% tariffs on around 21 billion euros of American goods, which will start on April 15. Hungary was the only EU country that voted against this response, preferring talks instead. China has gone further, putting 84% tariffs on US goods after American duties on Chinese imports reached a total of 104%. Trump has also said he will introduce tariffs that match the rates other countries charge the US. More than 70% of EU exports to the United States are now affected.
