Trump administration imposes fifty percent tariffs on Canadian exports

President Trump has placed 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods sold to the United States. The tariffs started on a Saturday, after trade talks between the two countries failed. Products like lumber, steel, potatoes, and grains are all affected.

Economist Trevor Tombe estimates that Canada could lose around 88,000 jobs. This includes workers in transport and delivery, not just the industries directly hit. A survey of small Canadian businesses found that 78 percent said their products would become too expensive to sell in the US market.

Every day, more than $2.5 billion in goods crosses the border between the two countries. Prices for everyday products may rise on both sides of the border.
