Trump administration discusses reviving Keystone XL pipeline project

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed restarting the Keystone XL pipeline in early 2026. Trump said he was open to the idea. The pipeline would carry around 830,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta, Canada, to Nebraska in the United States. The project was cancelled in 2021 when President Biden removed its permit, and the company behind it shut the project down. Restarting it would cost about $8 billion. A company called South Bow may get involved, but no developer has officially committed. The pipeline also faces serious problems because some sections were removed and many permits have expired. Environmental groups and Native American communities have long opposed the project.
