Trump administration directs postal service to restrict mail voting

President Trump signed an executive order in March 2026 to restrict mail voting across the United States. The order tells the Postal Service to collect voter lists from states before it can deliver mail ballots. This is a big change, because the Postal Service has always acted as a neutral carrier during elections. Congress set up the Postal Service in 1970 to be independent from political control. Trump has also nominated four people to its governing board, and three of them have questioned the 2020 election results. The Supreme Court has allowed preparations for the new rules to continue, but has not decided if the order is legal. The Postal Service published detailed new requirements for election officials in May 2026.
