Trump administration announces mine clearance in Strait of Hormuz

President Trump said on August 25, 2026 that the U.S. Navy had cleared all mines from the Strait of Hormuz. The mines have been removed or destroyed. Trump warned Iran that any new mines would bring immediate destruction of the ships involved. He called this a "zero tolerance" policy. Trump also said the U.S. Space Force is watching the entire strait, and that the United States has full control over the waterway. Oil shipments through the strait have fallen sharply. Before the conflict, more than 20 million barrels of oil passed through each day. That number is now around 5 million. Trump has previously said he wants the strait to become U.S. territory after the war ends.
