Treasury secretary's notepad reveals plan to purchase Japanese yen

A photographer caught US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's handwritten notes during a cabinet meeting at Camp David on Friday. The notes were visible when journalists were allowed into part of the meeting. A Reuters photographer took the picture at 11:33am local time.

The notepad showed a heading that said "To Do" and below it the words "Buy Japanese Yen (JPY) $5-10 bil". Bessent's name card was on the table next to the notepad.

The notes suggest the Treasury may be planning to buy between five and ten billion dollars' worth of Japanese yen. This kind of purchase can affect currency markets. A Treasury spokesperson has not responded to questions about the notes or whether the US has already acted to support the yen.
