Train derails in northern France injuring dozens of passengers

A passenger train derailed near Cléon in Normandy, France, on the evening of 11 September 2026. The train was travelling between Rouen and Caen when one carriage overturned and four others left the tracks. Around 180 to 200 people were on board. At least 44 passengers were injured. An 18-year-old woman was in a critical condition and was taken to hospital by helicopter. Emergency services put a major rescue plan into action within 15 minutes of the accident. The local prefect quickly activated emergency protocols to manage the response. The rail company SNCF reported serious disruption to services on the route and organised replacement buses for passengers who needed to continue their journey.
