Thousands of fish die in polluted London river over weekend

Thousands of fish died in the River Pool in Bromley, South London, over the weekend of 28-29 June after a pollution incident lowered oxygen levels in the water. Dead fish were found across a three-kilometre stretch of the river, from Cator Park in Beckenham down to where the Pool meets the River Ravensbourne. Several species were killed, including European eels, which are critically endangered. Eel numbers across Europe have fallen by around 95% since the 1980s. Thames Water brought in equipment to pump more oxygen into the water at several points along the affected stretch. The Environment Agency and Thames Water are still trying to identify the source of the pollution. Drinking water supplies were not affected by the incident.
