Thai Buddhist monk arrested for embezzling temple funds

Thai police arrested a Buddhist monk in mid-July on suspicion of stealing temple money. The monk, Phra Wachirayan, faces charges of embezzlement and money laundering. Police began their investigation after receiving an anonymous tip about financial misconduct. The alleged stolen amount is around $2.8 million, which is more than S$11 million. After his arrest, Phra Wachirayan was disrobed, meaning he is no longer a monk. Buddhist monks in Thailand make vows to give up personal wealth, so temple funds should only be used for religious and community purposes. Investigator Pattanasak Bupphasuwan led the case. When religious figures misuse money that people donate in trust, it damages confidence in religious institutions.
