Tennessee Republican congressman Andy Ogles loses primary election

Republican congressman Andy Ogles lost his primary election on Thursday in Tennessee. Ogles had held his seat for two terms, but he was defeated by Charlie Hatcher, a farmer and former state agriculture commissioner.

Ogles had the support of President Donald Trump, but this was not enough to save him. A political group spent around two million dollars against Ogles, mainly because of his opposition to renewable energy funding. Ogles had also faced criticism for anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant statements.

The election took place in a redrawn district that now covers 17 counties, stretching from near Nashville to parts of Memphis. Hatcher will now go forward to the general election in November, where he is expected to win easily.
