Stolen Picasso etching recovered in Milwaukee eight years after theft

A stolen Picasso artwork has turned up in a Milwaukee apartment, eight years after it disappeared.

The etching, called "Torero", was taken from a downtown art gallery in February 2018. A landlord named Timothy Dertz found it in August 2026 while cleaning out a vacant flat after an eviction. It was in a back bedroom, hidden behind a door, and covered in thick dust.

Dertz contacted an antique expert, who confirmed the piece was genuine. He then handed it to Milwaukee police on August 5.
