Singer Carly Simon announces Parkinson's disease diagnosis

Singer-songwriter Carly Simon, 83, has revealed she has Parkinson's disease. She made the announcement on July 27, explaining why she had been absent from public life for some time.

Simon first had problems with her knees and one hip. She had surgery to replace those joints, but her movement did not improve. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic then carried out a full examination and found she had Parkinson's, a condition that damages the nervous system and makes movement difficult.

She has started treatment for stiffness and other symptoms. Simon has also dealt with skin cancer in recent years.
