Researchers use machine learning to predict depression in epilepsy patients

Researchers in China have used artificial intelligence to predict depression and anxiety in people with epilepsy. The study tested six different machine learning models on 480 patients. Two models performed best: random forest and multilayer perceptron. Scientists found that social stigma was the most important factor in predicting poor mental health outcomes.

A separate pilot study also showed that AI can identify patients likely to develop long-term depression.

Epilepsy patients often suffer from anxiety and depression, but these conditions are frequently missed by doctors. Researchers believe these tools could help medical teams make better decisions about patient care. However, the models have not yet been tested in real hospitals, so further studies will be needed to confirm whether they work effectively in everyday clinical practice.
