Powerful earthquake strikes western Colombia killing over 110 people

A powerful earthquake hit western Colombia on 10 August 2026, killing at least 110 people. Different geological services measured it between 6.6 and 7.4 magnitude. Colombia's Geological Service said it was the strongest quake the country had recorded in ten years. The epicentre was about 100 kilometres underground. In Cali, around 20 buildings were completely destroyed. The city of Pereira, roughly six hours from Cali, reported at least 18 deaths. Two smaller aftershocks, measuring 2.8 and 4.8, followed the main quake. People in Bogotá were told to leave their buildings as a precaution. The earthquake was also felt in Ecuador and Panama. Rescue teams are currently searching collapsed buildings for survivors.
