Pensioners reminded to opt out of winter fuel payments before deadline

The UK Department for Work and Pensions reminded pensioners in September about deadlines to opt out of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme ahead of the 2026-2027 winter. Pensioners born before 28 June 1960 can receive between £100 and £300 to help cover heating costs, with payments usually sent out in November or December.

Those who wanted to opt out had to contact the DWP by 18 September by phone, or by 20 September online. Anyone with a yearly income above £35,000 will have their payment taken back through the tax system by HMRC. Most eligible pensioners receive the money automatically without applying. However, anyone who opts out will stay opted out in future years unless they choose to rejoin the scheme. Pensioners living in Scotland are not covered by this payment.
