Parasitic infection outbreak spreads across multiple U.S. states in 2024

A parasitic infection has sickened hundreds of people across the United States since May 2024. The illness, called cyclosporiasis, has been confirmed in at least 17 states, with some reports suggesting cases have now reached 18 states and over 400 people. At least 20 patients needed hospital treatment.

The state of Michigan saw an unusual spike, recording around 170 cases within just nine days. Normally, the state sees roughly 50 cases in an entire year.

The parasite spreads through contaminated water used on crops. Fresh produce such as berries, leafy greens, and herbs has been connected to several cases. Symptoms, which include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue, usually appear within two weeks of infection.
