Ontario premier installs Lake Ontario sign after Trump rename order

Ontario Premier Doug Ford put up a large sign on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario on Saturday. The sign reads "Lake Ontario. Now and Always." Ford installed it two days after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order to rename the lake "Lake America" in the United States.

Trump's order tells the U.S. Interior Department to update the name in American geographic records. He said the action was not a geopolitical message, but he pointed to long-standing trade disputes as his reason.

Ford said the lake's name is older than both Canada and the United States. The name comes from an Indigenous Huron word meaning "lake of shining waters." The sign was put up as trade tensions between the two countries grew. The U.S. placed 50 percent tariffs on billions of dollars of Canadian goods, and Canada announced matching tariffs in response.
