North Korea completes new uranium enrichment facility at nuclear complex

North Korea has built a new uranium enrichment facility at its Yongbyon nuclear complex. Construction started in December 2024. Kim Jong Un visited the building in June 2026 and said it was now operational. The facility has two storeys and can hold up to 28 centrifuge cascades, which are used to produce enriched uranium for nuclear weapons. Kim Jong Un said the facility would allow for much greater production. The International Atomic Energy Agency studied satellite images and confirmed the building is designed for uranium enrichment. South Korean officials say North Korea now runs four such facilities in total. Building the facility breaks UN Security Council resolutions. Diplomatic talks between North Korea and the United States broke down in 2019, and North Korea has been expanding its nuclear programme since then.
