New York City mayor explores arresting Netanyahu during UN visit

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in July 2026 that he wanted to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if Netanyahu visited the city. Mamdani called Netanyahu a war criminal and said he believed Netanyahu should face trial in The Hague. The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024. The ICC said he was responsible for war crimes in Gaza, including using starvation as a weapon. Mamdani asked the city's legal team to study whether New York had the power to act. He later admitted that the city did not have that power. President Trump also said on July 21 that Netanyahu would not be arrested anywhere in the United States.
