New Mexico court orders Meta to pay over 900 million dollars for child safety harms

A judge in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay $567 million in a child safety case. Judge Bryan Biedscheid made the ruling on Thursday, August 7, 2026. This comes after a jury already ordered Meta to pay $375 million in March. The total is now over $900 million. Most of the new money, $420 million, will pay for treatment services for young people. The judge said Meta's platforms cause harm like pollution from a factory. Meta must also delete accounts belonging to children under 13 in the state. The company will need to add screens that explain safety tools to users. Meta has said it will appeal the decision. New Mexico's Attorney General brought the original lawsuit.
