New Mexico court orders Meta to pay 567 million dollars for child safety harms

A New Mexico judge has ordered Meta to pay $567 million after finding the company harmed young people through its social media platforms. The ruling came on Thursday. Meta must also make changes to how its platforms work for users under 18. These include stopping push notifications at night, limiting young users to 90 hours per month, and removing Like counts from their feeds. Meta's AI chatbots will also be banned from romantic or sexual conversations with minors. The $567 million will pay for mental health treatment programmes for young people. This penalty comes on top of a $375 million fine from March, bringing the total to $942 million. The judge said Meta's behaviour was a public nuisance.
