Netflix announces animated Ghostbusters series to fill 1990s story gap

Netflix has announced a new animated series called Ghostbusters: Night Shift, which was first revealed at the Annecy film festival. The show will explore the 1990s, a period that the Ghostbusters films have never covered before. It is designed to connect the original 1980s movies with the more recent sequels, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

The idea began while filmmakers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan were writing Ghostbusters: Afterlife. They developed a story about a young girl who finds a proton pack inside a barn. The 2016 reboot directed by Paul Feig is not considered part of the official story.

Netflix's approach has been compared to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which similarly filled the gaps between separate film trilogies.
